Naval Special Warfare Development Group Seeks Special Sailors
NAPLES, Italy (NNS) -- Recruiters from the Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU) visited Naval Support Activity Naples Aug. 6, looking for Sailors interested in supporting special warfare commands.
Dozens of area Sailors attended a brief at the base theater to learn about opportunities that they might not otherwise hear about through normal channels.
"At the Naval Special Warfare Development Group, we do our own recruiting," said Master Chief Information Systems Technician Richard McGurr, a DEVGRU recruiter.
"Our billets don't show up on job advertising and selection systems or job career management system, so it is up to us to get out there and get the word out to the fleet that we have a command here that supports special warfare and we're out there to try to find the best and the brightest young Sailors in a myriad of ratings."
According to McGurr, those who are selected for orders are given unique opportunities that they might not have at other commands.
"A lot of our Sailors get jump-qualified, they can get coxswain qualified, qualifications that aren't typical to the normal Navy job," said McGurr.
"It's just something a little bit out of the norm, something out of their normal sea-shore rotation," said McGurr. "Whatever their rating specialty is, they'll be doing that type of work in support of SPECWAR. There's a lot of limelight on the special warfare community right now, so Sailors can do their part right now doing SEAL support, emergency ordnance disposal support."
